Protect yourself by researching who has rights to the song at ASCAP.com or another organization who can sell licensing. Paying for rights can be pennies for little used music to hundreds for popularly used music, but you can end up owing tens-of-thousands if you don't obtain rights in advance and could potentially lose the rights to your movie.
