Vanity, known as Denise Matthews, (January 4, 1959-February 15, 2016) was a Canadian R&B/Pop singer, songwriter, actress, model, and evangelist known famously throughout the world as one of the dynamic entertainers in the industry. She began her career as a model starring in commercials and photo shoots in 1978. She later formed her group Vanity 6 with Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie by Prince in 1981. The group recorded their hit single Nasty Girl which was #1 on the R&B charts. Vanity recorded two solo albums in the mid-80s. She also starred in numerous TV shows and films. Vanity struggled with her drug addiction and kidney problems in the 90s. Vanity retired from show business and went back to her real name Denise Matthews. She gave up her stage name along with her sexy onstage persona and became an evangelist. Denise Matthews spoke at numerous speaking engagements at churches throughout the world and devoted her entire life to Christ. She wrote her autobiography Blame It On Vanity in 2010. She died from renal failure at age 57. Denise Matthews is remembered by her friends, family, her colleagues, and a variety of celebrities throughout her entire life as an singer and an evangelist. However, she is also remembered as the beautiful sexy lady known as Vanity.
