Group members Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, and Brad Tursi wrote the song with Shane McAnally, who also produced it. The track is about a relationship being questioned about its future. "Written in the Sand" gave the group their fourth number one hit on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and reached number 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart. It also peaked outside the top 50 on the Hot 100 chart. The song was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has sold 246,000 copies in the United States as of April 2018. It achieved similar chart success in Canada, garnering the group their second number one hit on the Canada Country chart and peaking at number 83 on the Canadian Hot 100.
