"The One I Gave My Heart To" is a song by American singer Aaliyah from her sophomore studio album One in a Million (1996). The song was written by Diane Warren and it was produced by Guy Roche. Musically, the song is a pop and R&B power ballad with Aaliyah utilizing her soprano tone. Lyrically, the song is about the protagonist asking how could the person that she loved and gave her heart to break her heart badly. The song was released as the album's sixth and final single by Blackground and Atlantic records on September 16, 1997. Upon its release the song was met with generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising Aaliyah's vocal delivery and tone on the record. Commercially "The One I Gave My Heart To" performed well peaking within the top 10 at number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on the week ending on November 15, 1997. The song was just as successful on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart also peaking within the top 10 at number 8 on the week ending on December 6, 1997. The song also peaked within the top 20 at number 18 on Billboards Dance Club charts on the week ending on February 28, 1998. On October 21, 1997, the song was certified Gold by the RIAA. Towards the end of 1997 it was reported by Billboard that the song had sold over 900,000 copies in the United States.
