Good Clean Fun

The Monkees

About Good Clean Fun

"Good Clean Fun" is a song by The Monkees from their 1969 album The Monkees Present. Recorded on June 1, 1968, it was released on Colgems single #5005 on September 6, 1969. At the time of the release, The Monkees were a trio consisting of (Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Davy Jones, Peter Tork having left the group in December 1968. Written and sung by Nesmith, the song's title is never heard in the lyrics. "Good Clean Fun" reached No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 29 on the Easy Listening chart. The flip-side, "Mommy and Daddy", is sung by its writer Micky Dolenz. Listening to the lyrics, it's about a guy waiting for a plane carrying his girlfriend who he hasn't seen in over a year. Sometime in the 1970s, someone interviewed Nesmith and asked about this song, wondering if there was more to it than meets the ear. Nesmith admitted that the song's last line, "I told you I'd come back / and here I am", is actually meant as a threat, and that the song's narrator means to do his (ex) girlfriend great harm. Hence the ironic title "Good Clean Fun".

There's a smile on the wind as it touches my face
And starts to erase all the gloom
And the sun with a kiss, begins to dismiss the
Memory of my life without you
Well it seems like yesterday that my path took me away
Although I know it's been at least a year
But now my path heads home
And your patient time alone
Has brought me even closer to you, dear

And this plane gets closer
Every minute I look down to a watch that keeps looking back at me
And it says to me, "Be patient son you've waited this long."
How can I be strong?

And this the plane gets closer
Every minute I look down to watch that keeps looking back at me
And it says to me, "Be patient son you've waited this long."
How can I be strong?

Well the plane is finally down
And the engines stopped their sound
And I look in the crowd and there you stand
And the gap that once was time
Is forever closed behind
I told you I'd come back and here I am.
