About What's Going On

"What's Going On" is a song by American recording artist Marvin Gaye, released in 1971 on the Motown subsidiary Tamla. Originally inspired by a police brutality incident witnessed by Renaldo "Obie" Benson, the song was composed by Benson, Al Cleveland, and Gaye and produced by Gaye himself. Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, yea

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

Hmmmm…I see that no site ever includes the lyrics from the chorus in this song which is really tragic as it adds so much more flavor to this song than what you include here. “Picket signs (silly stuff) & picket lines (silly stuff) don’t punish me with brutality”

It’s important because he’s telling you that you think you’re doing something but that’s all “silly stuff” which doesn’t amount to a lot, the marching, the signs & the picketing.

Now when the “Picket signs/lines” lyric is repeated once more in the song the chorus changes the lyrics some, I don’t understand what they’re singing but I know it’s different. If anyone else does know feel free to respond. But that’s my two cents, hope it was worth it.

No one ever bothers to include the chorus. “Picket signs (silly stuff) & Picket lines (silly stuff). That’s my favorite line from the song because as the chorus further elaborates that’s all “silly stuff” the picket signs & picket lines. Unless I’ve been mishearing what they were saying all this years that’s what I think they’re saying. When these lyrics are repeated again in the song I think they changed it & I can’t understand what the chorus is singing so please excuse me.
