About There's a Ghost in My House

"There's a Ghost in My House" is a song written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland of Motown Records, together with R. Dean Taylor. It was originally recorded by Taylor in 1966. Produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, it was released as a single on the Motown subsidiary V. I. P. label in April 1967, but was not a hit. However, after it had become a popular dance song in Northern soul clubs in Britain, such as the Blackpool Mecca and Wigan Casino, R. Dean Taylor's record was reissued on EMI's Tamla Motown label with a B-side of "Let's Go Somewhere", and reached no. 3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1974. Versions of the song were later recorded by British bands Yachts (1980), B. E. F. (British Electric Foundation) featuring Paul Jones (1982), and the Very Things (1987). A version recorded by the Fall in 1987 became their first single to reach the top 50 in the UK, peaking at no. 30, and was included on their album The Frenz Experiment. A version was included by Graham Parker in 2000 on Loose Monkeys, an album of out-takes.

There's a ghost in my house
      The ghost of your memory
The ghost of a love you took from me

Where our love used to be
Only shadows from the past I see
      Time can't seem to erase
The vision of your smilin' face

      Though you found someone new
      I can't get over you
There's a ghost in my house

      I can't hide (There's a ghost in my house)
From the ghost of your love that's inside (There's a ghost in my house)
It keeps on haunting me (There's a ghost in my house)
Just keeps on reminding me (There's a ghost in my house)

In my mind I know you're gone
But my heart keeps holding on
To the memories of those happy times
To the love that once was mine

      For though we're far apart
      You're always in my heart
There's a ghost in my house

      I can't hide (There's a ghost in my house)
From the ghost of your love that's inside (There's a ghost in my house)
You're still such a part of me (There's a ghost in my house)
Still so deep in the heart of me (There's a ghost in my house)

I just keep hearing your footsteps on the stairs (There's a ghost in my
      house)
      When I know there's no-one there (There's a ghost in my house)
Everyday I love you more (There's a ghost in my house)
So much more than the day before (There's a ghost in my house)

      Sittin' in my easy chair
I feel your fingers runnin' through my hair
Lookin' down in my coffee cup
I think I see your face lookin' up

      All alone in my gloom
Your voice echoes through the room
There's a ghost in my house

And I can't hide (There's a ghost in my house)
From the ghost of your love that's inside (There's a ghost in my house)
It keeps on haunting me (There's a ghost in my house)
Just keeps on reminding me (There's a ghost in my house)

I just keep hearing your footsteps on the stairs (There's a ghost in my
      house)
      When I know there's no-one there (There's a ghost in my house)
You're still such a part of me (There's a ghost in my house)
Still so deep in the heart of me (There's a ghost in my house)

And I can't hide (There's a ghost in my house)
From the ghost of your love that's inside (There's a ghost in my house)
Every day I love you more, so much more (There's a ghost in my house)
Just keeps on reminding me (There's a ghost in my house)
