Merle Travis

Merle Robert Travis (November 29, 1917 – October 20, 1983) was an American country and Western singer, songwriter, and musician born in Rosewood, Kentucky. His lyrics often discussed the life and exploitation of coal miners. Among his many well-known songs are "Sixteen Tons", "Re-Enlistment Blues" and "Dark as a Dungeon". However, it is his masterful guitar playing and his interpretations of the rich musical traditions of his native Muhlenberg County, Kentucky for which he is best known today. "Travis picking", a syncopated style of finger picking, is named after him. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970 and elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1977. more »

You'd better change your way of livin' before the good Lord say that's all

Some people go to school to learn how to teach
Some people go to school tryin' to learn how to preach
If you can't preach without goin' to school
You ain't no preacher you're an educated fool
And that's all and that's all
You'd better change your way of livin' before the good Lord say that's all

Now a feller I know, well he's a mizer man, keeps tryin' to save all the money that he can
But when that ole undertaker lets him down
Where's he gonna spend that money under the ground
And that's all and that's all

Now man come from monkeys that's what some people say
But the Good Book brother just don't tell it that way
And if you believe that monkey tale like some folks do
Then I'd rather be that monkey, brother than you
And that's all and that's all
You'd better change your way of livin' before the good Lord say that's all.

Well my little song's finished, my little song's through
I didn't necessarily mean to sing this song for you
But If you don't like the way the little song goes
That's a pretty good sign I've been a-trumping on your toes
And that's all and that's all
You'd better change your way of livin' 'fore the good Lord say that's all
And that's all
