When I was staying in California
This was about 2013-2014
I was like 11 or 12 at the time
It was when I had first moved there
Anyways, my grandad Papa Charles he sent me this poem
He gifted it to me I think it was either my birthday or Christmas
The poem he sent was called "If" by Rudyard Kipling

I recommend it to everyone listening
Especially the young men listening
When I got it you know as a 12 year old boy 
I was thinking to myself what the f*ck is this shit man
I'm just tryna get to my fucking 
My 2k I'm just trying to get to my muhfuckin new sneakers and shit man 
You know what I mean
I was confused as hell when I saw a poem in the box along with my other gifts so
I asked him I was like "yo what's the poem for papa"
And he says "just have man 
And make sure you read it every year at least one time 
And as you get older it will only make more and more sense
Every time you read it"
I heard him
Even when I was younger 
I always listened to the wisdom my elders had bestowed upon me
And I still do
Shit now more than ever

Even though I was paying attention to the message 
He was trying to send still I was like "whatever you say pop"
But I did read it every year
Atleast one time
I'm 20 now and I still got my whole life ahead of me 
But the poem makes more sense
I still am deciphering it everyday but I get it more and more each time
And you know I don't want to spoil 
For the ones who are actually going to read it but
The first few lines of it read
"If you can keep your head 
When all about you are losing there's and blaming it on you"
It really puts me in the mind of that iconic Bruce Lee quote 
Where he's talking about being water
And after the opening line
The poem continues on by listing a whole bunch of challenges
That we all go through in our lives on a daily basis
And at the end of the poem it says if you are able 
To keep your head through all of that then you will be a man
So in my journey of being the man that I want to be
I try to be water and I try to keep my head
And through the grace of GOD I've been able to keep my head
Through the grace of GOD I'm able to realize how strong he made me
Through the grace of GOD I'm able to be grateful for all of the things 
I must endure to get me to where he wants me to go
I say all of that to say this that poem is the greatest gift 
If not the greatest gift I've ever received
Cause everyday I'm trying to keep my fucking head
