Threnody

A threnody is a wailing ode, song, hymn or poem of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person. The term originates from the Greek word θρηνῳδία (threnoidia), from θρῆνος (threnos, "wailing") and ᾠδή (oide, "ode"), the latter ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₂weyd- ("to sing") that is also the precursor of such words as "ode", "tragedy", "comedy", "parody", "melody" and "rhapsody". Synonyms include "dirge", "coronach", "lament" and "elegy". The Epitaphios Threnos is the lamentation chanted in the Eastern Orthodox Church on Holy Saturday. John Dryden commemorated the death of Charles II of England in the long poem Threnodia Augustalis, and Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote a "Threnody" in memory of his son. more »

It always starts the same way
Another crack in the sky
Another dream I cannot fight away
Constant guilt over a life I never lived

The sentiment is there, but would you care
If my heart ever stopped beating
Far away from the light
A mind in disguise
Broken visions of my regret
Plague me day in and day out

The emptiness overlooking the distance
Will it ever be worth it
In a universe where we are destined to suffer
In silence, we suffer
(In silence, we suffer) One day
(In silence, we suffer) One day
(In silence, we suffer) One day, One day, I'll be free

I'll be consumed by the darkness
And separate my heart from my mind
Is this the end that I've always envisioned
The only home I know

The fires in the sky
Are casting shadows in our eyes
And when we reach the end
We fall to Earth again

The emptiness overlooking the distance
Will it ever be worth it
In a universe where we are destined to suffer
In silence, we suffer
(In silence, we suffer) One day
(In silence, we suffer) One day
(In silence, we suffer) One day, One day, I'll be free

The fires in the sky
Are casting shadows in our eyes
And when we reach the end
We fall to Earth again

Let me fall
Let me forget
Let me fall
Let me forget
In silence, we suffer
