When you grow in a small town
You know more often than not
You can't wait to get the hell out there
And give the world a shot
But as time goes on
You start thinkin' about the past
And pine for days long gone
Days you know you'll never get back

When the St. James was hoppin
Full of family and friends
Drinking Genny and dancing
To the Chicken Wired Band
And everybody was happy
At least for the night
So and so was still alive
Raising hell till they shut off the lights

One night I was driving through
The town I once called home
I decided to stop and visit
Some places I used to know
The diner grandma where took me
For apple pie and strawberry shakes
Was shut down, boarded up
Not a light on in the place

So I got myself a sixer
And walked to Victory Park
Stared a while at the deep blue sky
At pinpoints in the dark
And I let my mind wonder
To a time, oh way back when
Things were so much simpler
At least we like to pretend
