One cold dark day last year, as bad as it could be
I found myself wondering just where my life would lead
So I went down to the river to watch the waters flow
And contemplate a future I did now know

Then I noticed an old man sitting not far away
Looking in my direction he beckoned me
So I went and sat by him, just I and I
Ooo, then he looked at me, and he said

Sail on the breath of Jah
Straight to Zion

Say, what does this mean to me, Jah Jah hasn’t been so good
He said it means a lot, you just haven’t understood
Jah’s not someone to help the helpless or feed those who are not fed
He gave us this paradise, what more do you need
He said

So now if I ever get down to despair
Or I see friends around me looking sad
I remember the old man I met that day
And I recall the wisdom of what he said…he said
