I find myself running behind the train
That is carrying all of my dreams away from me
I wish this were a dream
And I wish that I could wake up
To a nice hot meal on the train

But I'm constantly running behind the train
And I can't stop stepping on the turtle shells
That are slippery from the rain
I wish I had a chance to help this world advance
But I'm useless if I can't catch up to that train

And my friends all pass me by
Riding horses of green and white
And I watch them dismount and step onto that train
My girl is reaching out to me
From a window that I cannot see
But I slip again and fall further behind the train

But I'm desperately running behind the train
There's a band on the roof but I can't hear what they're playing
Through the wind and the thunder and the rain
I see a silhouette in a flash of lightning
And it looks an awful lot like a shadow of me

I'm frantically running behind the train
It's too dark to see but I hear them calling my name
For that I can't give up
But I know I'm not fast enough
Now I'm just a fool who jumped off of that train

And my family is on that train
They have found their seats and are out of the rain
And as they wonder where I am I'm screaming behind the train
My future is on that train
It shot me in the back and ran off with my brain
But my debt I will collect if I can just get on that train

Every time I speak I only put myself to shame
And if there's a god in the skies
I'd like him to apologize
But in the end I know it's only me I have to blame
