Oh, the mockingbird he followed me from tree to tree Saying, "You are nothing like what I think you should be" And when his words would cut like daggers he would take no blame at all See, the mockingbird knew nothing that could ever harm him More than all the empty space left in his heart And all the buckshot in the world could never break his fall And when I trip on lowly branches Then he picks on lower fruit to bring me down And every day he gives no answers Only offers speech so senseless and so loud The mockingbird would follow me from tree to tree Bombarding me with all his insecurity 'Til nothing's left of me that isn't shattered and unclean But in breaking down everything that I called myself I found a new identity in something else And learned what sticks and stones and all those weapons really mean And when I trip on lowly branches Then he picks on lower fruit to bring me down But now I realize what he's after And his unchecked words no longer seem so loud Oh, the mockingbird still follows me from tree to tree Crying, "Why are you not paying any mind to me?" I hope that one day he will see the error of his ways His insults and attacks are growing tired and sad I don't know if he knows just what effect he's had But maybe he will meet his own mockingbird one day
