The Preacher said, "Son, Do you believe

Then come up cleansed to eternal life"

Then they put me to the water
Where the stream runs deep
Where the crickets chirp and the willows weep
And I could hear my father - say a prayer for me
"This is my son in whom I'm pleased"
As the Spirit fell like a gentle breeze
My teeth did shiver and I wiped my eyes
I came out of that river and I was baptized

One day they'll call my name or they'll call my bluff
They might say that I loved, but it was never enough
Tell the boys to play the promenade with pride
And then march my soul to the riverside

Let the Preacher say, "We are earth to earth"
Then trust my dust to where I found my birth
Let the current carry what I could not hide
To the mouth of the Erie down on the river's tide

Put me in the water
Where the stream runs deep
While the children sing and my widow weeps
Tell  my sons and my daughter - To say this prayer for me
"Old man, old man, you are finally free
Go back to the source of your mystery"
Until the laughter overtake your cries
I'll float down to the river where I was baptized
