When they are puppies they have so much zing
Running and playing and sniffing and chewing
On every last thing
And as they get bigger and start to grow mild
They bring back that puppy again anytime
They sense you need a smile
They stay by your ankles in case you might need them
Just happy to be in your pack
As you both grow older the one thing you're sure of
Is that ball of fuzz has your back

Four legs and fur, innocent and pure
There's something special inside their hearts
But what, I'm not quite sure
And I know I'll never feel love that's more true and secure
Than came from my friends with four legs and fur

When they are kittens they tear up your house
Scratching and clawing and swatting and pouncing
Like they've found a mouse
Your home is their kingdom they follow no rules
They'll go anywhere because they just don't care
If you disapprove
They'll hide in the darkness for hours on end
Then come out and whine for a meal
You think they don't care 'til they purr on your chest
And show you how they really feel

Four legs and fur, innocent and pure
There's something special inside their hearts
But what, I'm not quite sure
And I know I'll never feel love that's more true and secure
Than came from my friends with four legs and fur

And then one sad day we say our goodbyes
They take their last breaths and the light leaves their eyes
And it breaks your heart right down to the core
Cuz you know as much as you loved them, somehow they loved you more

And I know forever that I'll feel a love that endures
For all my friends who came with four legs and fur
