The Wits

The Wits is a Caroline era stage play, a comedy by Sir William Davenant. It was licensed for performance by Sir Henry Herbert, the Master of the Revels, on 19 January 1634; it was staged by the King's Men at the Blackfriars Theatre. It was first published in quarto by Richard Meighen in 1636. A number of critics have considered it "Davenant's most successful and influential comedy."Herbert was initially unhappy with The Wits, particularly on account of its oaths and explicit language; the influential courtier Endymion Porter interceded with King Charles I to tolerate and allow the play, which then proved popular at Court. People don't understand why we live in fear
They say they know but their feelings aren't clear
Their mannerisms replicate each time
The years progress but we're just not your kind
Oh and I've been trying I've been trying real hard to see all things through
Why's it always me that seems to only understand you
At the end of the day we'll find ways to walk hand in hand once again
But honey for just now you'll be a memory I fail to retain
I fail to see why we have to pretend
That life has meaning all we plan is the end
How can we be expected to
Fabricate these lies
When in reality we're your beacons in disguise
Oh and I've been trying I've been trying real hard to see all things through
Why's it always me that seems to only understand you
At the end of the day we'll find ways to walk hand in hand once again
But honey for just now you'll be a memory I fail to retain
Oh and I've been trying I've been trying real hard to see all things through
Why's it always me that seems to only understand you
At the end of the day we'll find ways to walk hand in hand once again
But honey for just now you'll be a memory I fail to retain
