I've got that feeling You know the one when you run down To the corner late at night for cough drops and bread You walk in and it's quiet Except for that 80's song playing overhead That you hated even back then Even though it's calm at this hour There's another shopper and they're shuffling their feet You notice they've got shampoo and cat food in their handheld basket But they seem unsure of what else they want You move on your way to the back of the store Passing the bins with the leftover Christmas stuff That no one's going to buy because it's January 4th Another song starts playing now But it's worse than the one before It instantly reminds you of being lost In that department store looking for your Mom You grab what you need plus a a few things you don't And walk up to the register thinking how lucky you are that nobody else in line As you place your stuff on the counter you notice the cashier She's checking her phone to see if anyone liked her post About being bored at work on the late shift She halfway glances when you awkwardly hold the empty basket up Which you think clearly indicates hey, where should this go? But you decide to just push it to the side Meanwhile she reluctantly puts her phone away When you ask how's it going? She shrugs and says umm ok I guess I mean That's when your bread won't scan And she can't figure out why or how to manually key it in So she calls for her manager The one outside now taking an interrupted smoke break Now he clacks on the keyboard for a minute or two As you watch his crooked name tag Start to sway along with his increasingly forceful keyboard strokes You feel like this is taking longer than it should But it isn't busy so it's the only lane open That's when shampoo cat food shopper lady shows up behind you Oh and suddenly she's got places to be and felines to feed You can tell she's already impatient She somehow stares a hole through you While managing to completely ignore you at the same time You know she's blaming you for choosing an unscannable item And holding up her life You try to be affable and make small talk But she shows no interest She doesn't want to hear your excuses Or how you thought you could quickly grab a couple items Because nobody else would be in here at this hour She let's out a sigh when you turn back around A little too loudly so you know she's annoyed Finally the manager gives up and moves to another register And this is your chance to let this woman with the pressing appointment go first Because you can't stand the pressure Even though it's not your fault But then you don't let her Still you wonder how you manage to get yourself in these situations You promise yourself it won't happen again But you know good and well it will happen again And there's not a damn thing you can do about it So you pay and take your bag And make your way out the automatic door Back into the cold for the short trip home And just as you pull into the drive You remember You forgot the milk
