Eikthyrnir

Eikþyrnir (Old Norse: [ˈɛikˌθyrnez̠], "oak-thorny") or Eikthyrnir, is a stag which stands upon Valhalla in Norse mythology. The following is related in the Gylfaginning section of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda after the description of Heiðrún. Brodeur follows the text of the T manuscript of the Prose Edda in putting the stag í Valhöll, "in Valhall", rather than á Valhöll, "upon Valhall", as the other manuscripts do. The more recent translation by Anthony Faulkes puts the stag on top of the building, which seems much more natural from the context and weight of the evidence. Snorri's source for this information was almost certainly Grímnismál, where the following strophes are found. more »

Forged of fire and ashes in the halls of stone below
Wrought of sun and moonlight in the land of ice and snow
The blades of mighty kings and magic of the sage and seer
Can not save us from ourselves, we've gone too far it seems

As the wind did blow and the halls came down
The fairest king had lost his crown
The last whose realm was fair and free
Between the mountains and the sea

Far beyond the rising sun, in an ancient land
There was told a prophecy that none could understand
Far beyond the wisdom of the old ones never learned
We will never truly know the beauty of the earth

Through the magic mirror gate, we see what we once were
The sacred and the wondrous only that for which we yearn
The only paradise above are castles in the sky
When will we realize there's no salvation when we die?

When silence reigns in the sacred shrine
And majesty has been lost to time
A part of man become lost and cold
Our spirit never shall be whole

Far beyond the rising sun, in an ancient land
There was told a prophecy that none could understand
Far beyond the wisdom of the old ones never learned
We will never truly know the beauty of the earth

In time we understand what we never should have known
Yet fear still holds us, and our love has yet to grow
So much has been revealed, still the grand delusion reigns
What we are searching for is what has been lost within

The sage has lost his wisdom, immortal gods have died
The tyrant's reign has come again as we hear the angel's cry
Now at the ends of earth as the clouds usurp the stars
We must hold on to love as we step into the dark
