Eikthyrnir

Eikþyrnir (Old Norse: [ˈɛikˌθyrnez̠], "oak-thorny") or Eikthyrnir, is a stag which stands upon Valhalla in Norse mythology. The following is related in the Gylfaginning section of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda after the description of Heiðrún. Brodeur follows the text of the T manuscript of the Prose Edda in putting the stag í Valhöll, "in Valhall", rather than á Valhöll, "upon Valhall", as the other manuscripts do. The more recent translation by Anthony Faulkes puts the stag on top of the building, which seems much more natural from the context and weight of the evidence. Snorri's source for this information was almost certainly Grímnismál, where the following strophes are found. more »

Hear me all ye hallowed beings, both high and low, children of Heimdall
In the beginning did Ymir live, was nor land nor sea, and green things nowhere
But Valfather you must recall, lifting the world to create Midgard
From kin of etin now I come, so that I well set for thee the fates of the world

South the sun by the side of moon, heaved his right hand over heaven's rim
On Itha plain gods glad were they, til cometh maidens three from etinhome
Did Aesir shrines and temples build, nio till antal pa Yggdrasil
Thence wise maidens they laws did make, they lives did choose
For men they marked their fates

I ween the first war in the world was this
Thence battled Gulveig the Aesir
And in the hall of Herjan burned her
Three times burned they, the thrice reborn

The prophecy doth unfold, Valfather hears of the coming Norn
Seeress comes from the grave to reveal all the lore of the gods
In the world Jotunheim, Baldr is slain, blessed god of light
In the dark fall Nidhogg, from the ruins a new world is born

His spear had Odin sped over the host
The first of feuds thus was fought
Then broken in battle, the breastwork of Asgard
Fighting Vanir, the gods of old

The prophecy doth unfold, Valfather hears of the coming Norn
Seeress comes from the grave to reveal all the lore of the gods
In the world Jotunheim, Baldr is slain, blessed god of light
In the dark fall Nidhogg, from the ruins a new world is born

Neither cleansed his hands nor combed his hair
Til Baldr's slayer was sent to Hel
But Frigg did weep in Fensalir, the fateful deed
Wit ye further or how?

Where Heimdall's horn is hid she knows
Hung from Yggdrasil the secrets lay
Wit from Mimir's well I sow
To the gods of northern lands I pray

In the east, in Ironwoods
Bred there the brood of Fenrir
When one of these, worse than they all
And as a wolf, the sun swallow

Axe age, sword age, sundered are shields
Wind age, Wolf age, ere the world crumbles

Brothers fight to bloody end
And sisters sons their sib betray
Woe's in the world, much wantonness
Will spears of no man spare the other

Axe age, sword age, sundered are shields
Wind age, Wolf age, ere the world crumbles

Mimir's sons dance, the downfall bodes
When blares the gleaming Gjallarhorn
Loud blows Heimdall with horn aloft
In Hel's dark hall the horror spreadeth

Fares Hrym from the east holding his shield
Jormungandr in mighty rage
Scatters the waves, screams the eagle
His nib tears the dead. Naglfar loosens

Cometh Surt from the south, with the singer of twigs
The war god's sword like a sun doth shine
The tall hills sway and the trolls stagger
Men fare to Hel. The heavens rive

Comes then Mjolnir's mighty wielder
The fearless fighter, Fenrir to slay
Gapes the grizzly Jornumgandr
When strides forth Thor to stay the worm

Mightily mauls Midgard's warder
Shall all wights wander from home
Back falls nine steps the sons of Fjorgyn
Nor fears for fame from the frightful worm

I see green again, with growing things
The earth arise from out of the sea
Fell torrents flow, overflies them the eagle
In hoar highlands which hunts for fish

Again the Aesir on Itha plain meet
To speak of mighty Jormungandr
Again go over the great world doom
And Fimbultyr's unfathomed runes

Then in the grass, the golden figures
The far famed ones will be found again
Then will Hoenir handle blood wands
Which they had owned in olden days

On unsown acres the ears will grow
All ill grow better will Baldr come then
Both he and Hoth will in Hropt's hall dwell
In wide wind home
Do ye wit more or how?

I see a hall than the sun more fair
Thatched with red-gold, which is Gimle hight
There will the gods all guiltless throne
In ease and bliss live on forever more
