Devil's kitchen lake Is the deepest lake in all Illinois And one year on spring break A friend of mine, a nice jewish boy Came to visit me there I went to college in a city close by it And we were not to be fair Outdoorsy men but anxious to try it Some background perhaps is in order My grandad was jewish but grandma not a smidgeon Which makes my dad a half jew and me a quarter Jewishness is a bloodline as well as a religion I asked if he could please bring A fishing pole and we'd fish for each meal He brought a little kids plaything It was pink with Barbie portrayed on the reel I said "don't worry, I've got a good pole we'll take" Like I knew what I was doing And We went to Devils Kitchen Lake To camp and fish and spend time canoeing We found a campground and excitedly rented Two canoes, oars and cushions for floatin' Two rules were very clearly presented: Alcohol and swimming were verboten We were one and one quarter Jews On Devil's Kitchen Lake in canoes We had two fishing poles but only one fishing pole we could use We had a cooler full of beer to the brim We decided we would race on a whim But only one quarter Of the one and one quarter Jews Knew how to swim So now one and one quarter young jewish guys Are Out on the deep lake We had fishing and camping supplies And beer which was illegal to take My friend cast his Charlie Brown fishing pole It fell apart and it sunk Swallowed by this very deep fishing hole And by then we were drunk In his drunkenness, he said let's race and he'll beat me He pulled way out in front and appeared to be winning But In a flash he flipped over completely He tried to grab the canoe but it was spinning. We were one and one quarter Jews On Devil's Kitchen Lake in canoes We had two fishing poles but only one fishing pole we could use We had a cooler full of beer to the brim We decided we would race on a whim But only one quarter Of the one and one quarter Jews Knew how to swim I jumped in to save him And that sent my canoe far adrift He grabbed the cushion I gave him Like his favorite Hanukah gift We steadied the canoe And swam it to the nearest lake bank Once on shore we both knew That our gear and our beer had all sank We had to walk back to the campground 2 miles And We were several miles from home They asked "have you been drinking" to which we issued denials We paid for the oars and cushions and we bid them "shalom" We were one and one quarter Jews On Devil's Kitchen Lake in canoes We had two fishing poles but only one fishing pole we could use We had a cooler full of beer to the brim We decided we would race on a whim But only one quarter Of the one and one quarter Jews Knew how to swim
