An Accident of Birth

Struggling creatures leaving all that was before
On our hands and knees as we reached out to your beautiful shores
In deserts and jungles together alone
Across the borders we stumbled to find our new home
Life through a prism. Split light and dark
Freedom or prison. Why are we so marked?
What's offered to us? An open hand or a fist
What feelings go through us? What led us to this?

Is it all in God's plan, how we get to come first?
How we meet our demands. How we feed our hunger and thirst
To have or have not. The rose or the thorn
To get what we want, through where and when we were born
Is it life in a bubble or a lifetime of struggle?
A life that is blessed or tested and cursed
Do the cards fall equal? Is God's love so merciful?
Are the grotesque and beautiful just an accident of birth?

All through this city, left and right, up and down
In darker places, life is hand to mouth
Drifting through a haze of silver-liningless clouds
Days and days and days of disparity and doubt
Not hard to find. We're here everyday
If you look you can see us. Though most look away
Happy just not to be us. What more can you say? What more can you say?
Well you can say it's a tragedy and can vote for an end
To this blight on humanity and try not to pretend
It was all our fault that we fell in the dirt
When the truth is all too obviously an accident of birth
Yeah, it's all in God's plans....demands, through an accident of birth

So, we'll argue over privilege and cold sacrifice
We'll argue for empathy and the soul of human rights
We'll fight for the ideologue so desperate for change
And we'll beg for freedom to be freed from its cage
A cage of restrictions by those who call the shots
To end the afflictions of those who have not
To spread out the riches and the life some have got. And what lives some have got
So with no value judgments of deserving or worth
We'll apportion the abundance from those accidents of birth

The lights of the city where I come from
Are they neon so pretty or the flashes of bombs?
Are we lucky to be alive or just lucky in love?
Thankful for the times when we were just lucky enough
Is it life in a bubble.... (Who takes the hunger, who slakes the thirst? Who has the luckiest number?)

Descant

Paradise is on display
For us we get it every day
It's always for us this way
Possessions galore
Concessions more and more
All we work for
We need it all
We got what we deserve
Don't go rocking the boat
Stay cool, stay low
Or we will lose it all
