Layla

"Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally released by their blues rock band Derek and the Dominos, as the thirteenth track from their only studio album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (November 1970). Its contrasting movements were composed separately by Clapton and Gordon. The song was inspired by a love story that originated in 7th-century Arabia and later formed the basis of The Story of Layla and Majnun by the 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, a copy of which Ian Dallas had given to Clapton. The book moved Clapton profoundly, because it was the tale of a young man who fell hopelessly in love with a beautiful, young girl and went crazy and so could not marry her. I fear 9 to 5 jobs
And working for some other person
I fear feeling lost
And wandering around
Wondering where my passion's gone
I used to fight for all my dreams
And I know I need to cross
This version of me

And I'll find city lights made up of the broken dreams
Of everyone who used to pass by on autumn nights
Thinking of how life will be
Depressing ain't it right?

I won't settle down
For what makes me miserable
And I won't be satisfied
With life passing me by
Wishing I had the courage to come
Into me, myself and I

I fear not living for me
And fighting to make others happy
I hate to people please
But yet it is my strongest trait
I hate not being seen
Cause it happens way more often
Than I want to admit
It's really embarrassing

And I'll find city lights made up of the broken dreams
Of everyone who used to pass by on autumn nights
Thinking of how life will be
Depressing ain't it right?

I won't settle down
For what makes me miserable
And I won't be satisfied
With life passing me by (passing me by by, passing it on)
Wishing I had courage to come
Into me, myself and I

There is courage
Mind my conscience
Don't want regret in my coffin
I am fragile
To my hurting
And if I'm unhappy
Then it is a burden

Don't disturb my peace
It's making me uneasy
Don't disturb my peace
It's making me uneasy

I won't settle down
For what makes me miserable
And I won't be satisfied
With life passing me by
Wishing I had courage to come
Into me, myself and I
