As a young boy growing up he dreamed
He dreamed how he'd become a man
Nothing could be better it seemed
Than to have a regiment at his command

He finished school and joined the service
The service was his destiny fulfilled
They broke him down till he felt worthless
So he'd obey when the order came to kill

Discipline and order served him well
Well he rose up through the ranks in time
He earned his stripes, he never fell
For any notions that didn't toe the line

Life is short and precious
But I know just why I'm here
I wanna be a good soldier
And make this my career

All those years the country was at peace
He never got to prove himself a man
Instead of taking charge in battlefields
They promoted him to sit around and plan

Came a day when the country went to war
A general now, he sent young men to die
They couldn't ask what they were fighting for
They had no right to know the reason why

But the general was certain he knew best
He'd studied strategy and history and strife
He understood the country's interest
In defending its god-given way of life

When war was over he retired his commission
He had served but he had never had to fight
He had made some difficult decisions
Other men had to pay the price

Now he's old and infirm and alone
Alone with his medals and his memories
By himself in the old soldiers' home
Sifting through the past, uneasily

He's troubled that he's goin' to see the lord
And lord knows he's begun to have his doubts
Did I have to send those boys to die, and what for?
Could we have found another way to work things out?
