Golden light from Laurelin
And silver from Telperion
Shining bright in Valinor
Yavanna's work was beautiful
Thought to be immutable
But jealous Melkor fled to Avathar
Hiding in the lightless dark
Where he sought to find
The spider from the depth of time
And so he went plotting with Ungoliant
Hidden deep in her crevice
From the trees of light
From their leaves shining gold
Gold and silver bright

But ever hungry was she for
The light she feared
So Morgoth' devious plan she gladly heared
And lightly he there promised
That when the trees
Were gone and vanished
And their glow forever banished
And she still would hunger more
Ye with both hand he'd give her all
And in his heart he laughed
As he did not plan
To pay the spider for her craft
But the lesser thief
Took the lure
And in a cloak of dark,
Ungoliant obscured them in
Unlight as they set forth

Then she slowly wrought her webs
Rope by rope, from cleft to cleft
Climbing, crawling, clinging
Ever upwards to Hyarmentir
While the Valar were
Feasting, dancing, singing
'Twas the first gathering of fruit that year
So without vigilance they were
When swiftly Melkor swept
Down the western slopes and crept
Across the plains of Valinor
Like a strange cloud
Upon the sunlit earth without a sound
Came they to green mound Ezellohar
Where the trees were standing tall
And Melkor jumped upon it
And with his black spear
Smote each tree to its core
And their sap flowed from it
Like blood in Valinor

And Ungoliant she sucked it up and drained
Root and branch and leaf forever stained
The poison of Ungoliant
Killed the trees and darkened them
The Wells of Varda she drank dry
And belched forth black vapors to the sky
And swelled to a vast and hideous shape
That even Melkor was afraid
Valinor of beauty and light bereft
In dark cloud again they fled
First north and east o'er ice and south
They escaped the Valars wrath
And no song or tale
Could contain the grief and terror that befell
A darkness made by malice out of light
Setting in ev'ry heart a doubt and fright
