I watched my evergreen tree
Go up in flames on New Year's Eve
And in about twenty seconds it became just as burnt out as me

I used to look at the sky 
With nothing but hope in my eyes
Now as I watch the ashes fly
It's hard not to feel terrified

It never really made sense in my mind
To gather around and worship this child
Are you sure that this is really divine?
Or have you just started believing your own lies
I guess that's what we do to survive
After all it's Christmas time

Now that I'm older I know
All of the rules to this game
I'll tell you exactly what you wanna hear
And we'll both walk away unscathed

I'm letting everyone down
But these boxes can't make me happy
How is this a fair response
To a life of humility?

Is this really my religion?
Come home for a weeks vacation
Tell my family that I've missed them
Hear them shouting from the kitchen
Get in the same car in the morning
To go sing songs about His glory
And hear a stale revelation
That the true gift is in the story

I guess it's what we do to survive
I guess I can't find the divide
I guess it's better not to try
