He walked as if upon a breeze A guy with a hood and a scythe He said, won't you take a walk with me She said, I'm sorry but I'm busy tonight He grinned and shook his head I'm in the business of setting souls free She said, I'd really love a break But I've a lot of people counting on me She got behind the wheel And he took the passenger seat Showed her an hourglass As she pulled the car out on to the street He said, why not stay home tonight It seems your time is getting pretty near She grinned and shook her head I'm in the business of keeping souls here They talked a while to pass the time As she drove back to the hospital ward She saw the grains of sand But she didn't bother watching them fall They walked together to the doors But she held her arm out blocking his way Forgive me being rude But you're not welcome in here today He stood back stunned and sadly said But you know it's just a matter of time She said, I'll stand here 'til I can't And while I'm stood here you're not crossing that line Why not stay home tonight I think that you deserve a day off He said, I think you might be right But I'll have to have a word with my boss So he took his scythe and turned to leave But looked back again to where he still stood He offered a cold, white hand And he smiled at her from under his hood He said farewell for now I'll inevitably be back here soon She grinned and shook his hand And I'll be stood here waiting for you
