Well I gathered up my lumber
And setup near a pond
Muggy nights
The flies will bite
Stay close to the fire
But in the dead of winter
You think of life and death
You fortify your shelter
With everything you have

Four years on this mountainside
Where rodents fear to dwell
I get along 'til I seen her face
In the water inside my well
It was a mere hallucination
A flash from underneath
With lips that looked like apples
That sink into your teeth

And the days go by in the usual way
Not a whole lot to figure out
Avoid all passing villagers
And fish a little trout

I saw her face again
She walked right past my window
And my candle it went dead

It was remote and it was rugged
Almost found my little piece
But the puzzle just needs solvin'
Or does history repeat?
For it was with my good old axe in hand
I was taking down a tree
When I saw smoke over the mountain
And a woman beside me

I have felt her in the flesh this time
And in many other ways
Say I don't seek no companions
'Cuz I always feel betrayed
Ahhh, but it was in the dead of winter
She made me change my mind
Thought I wanted peace and quiet
But I needed womankind
