Close my eyes and envision a better picture
Of a world where pigment makes no difference
See I grew up with brothers who were the same color as me
But it wouldn’t take me long to discover the others like me
With the same personalities that didn't share the same looks
But read the same books
Enjoyed the same foods
Loved staying up late at night doing the stupid shit that only kids can do
Without a clue, there'd be a world waiting for us outside
That would tell us to look down at our hands and feet and ask us what we see
With the expectation just because our ancestors came from different nations
We weren’t likely to enjoy each others company
Or share the same space in peace
Like the very air, we’d breathe would be different to us each
But I'm learning, there's a lot more to life than race
And I’m finding
They’ve drawn lines in the sand
They tell you not to move
But I'm telling you it’s time these lines were re-drew
I remember when a new kid moved into the neighborhood
We spent the summer playing video games
Drinking Kool-Aid and laughing till our sides burst
But the school year came and they called my new best friend Oreo
And I didn’t get it
See they had it twisted
Focused solely on the pigment
Stereotypes passed down to a younger crowd but they had it all turned around
See Kurt was just a nerd that did nothing wrong but being black in the burbs
And it hurt when I learned that this ignorance had been passed down for generations
Frankly, I'm amazed that even in today’s day and age people still garner so much baseless hatred
Based on the basics being handed down by some aging racists
Think it’s time we looked down at the lines in the sand and did some rearranging
Self-exploration and reinterpretation
Besides the world could use some more patience is all I'm saying
And I’m finding
They’ve drawn lines in the sand
They tell you not to move
But I'm telling you it’s time these lines were re-drew
