The Altogether

The Altogether is Orbital's sixth studio album and was released in 2001. It features guest vocals by the Hartnolls' brother-in-law David Gray, a sampled Ian Dury, a sample from "Sober" by Tool and a version of the Doctor Who theme. It was Orbital's last studio album for FFRR and received a mixed critical reception. Describing the album shortly before it was released, Phil Hartnoll said, "Whereas Middle of Nowhere was written for a detached mood, for sitting in a field and listening to by yourself, The Altogether is for listening to at a party with your mates. That's what I take it to mean anyway. Paul thinks it's about not having any clothes on."As of 2001, it had sold 135,000 copies worldwide. As of 2004, the album had sold 58,000 copies in United States. more »

Baby baby rest your head on me
I’ll brush your hair behind your ears if you can’t see
That you and I have found the Holy Grail
That cup of gold we’re told is strong but hearts are frail
Baby baby flip the pages through
On rainy days when there ain’t nothing more to do
Thinking this is what I came here for
We hear that bell ringing but won’t get the door
This shouldn’t have been so easy
But oh so suddenly…
I see us there, on the New York state line
Bathing in the sunshine and loving the brand new day
My hair, a color just brown of gold
And hoping I don’t grow old to see it all turn to grey
Hey you, I hear you got a brand new car
It might get you fast but it won’t get you far
And every week a different girl in the passenger’s seat
Well I got something better, gonna knock you off your feet
This girl is mine forever
And we’ll dream our little dreams…
Until we’re there, on the New York state line
Bathing in the sunshine and loving the brand new day
My hair, a color just brown of gold
And hoping I don’t grow old to see it all turn to grey
We’ll take our time here, swap my fears for yours
And we’ll walk the line here, so fine out of doors
The highway she roars
Baby, baby rest your head on me
I’ll brush your hair behind your ears if you can’t see
This shouldn’t have been so easy
But oh so suddenly…
I see us there, on the New York state line
Bathing in the sunshine and loving the brand new day
My hair, a color just brown of gold
And hoping I don’t grow old to see it all turn to grey
