There once was a horse wild and brave
Out of the mist he came
Mane flowing like the breaking waves
Aonbarr was his name
Some say he was just a wandering spirit
He'd appear without a sound
Running fast but you couldn't hear it
His hooves never touched the ground

Sophia was a wise young girl
She'd laugh and sing all day
The fiddle made her step and swirl
Never mind what people say
In the forest she spied that mighty horse
It brought her a joyful tear
He gave her a nod and leapt with force 
Then he disappeared

Sophia found him everyday 
She'd brush his glossy coat
She'd take him apples and hay
And feed him the finest oats
Some racing men grew jealous
They wanted Aonbarr to run their course
"Sophia there's gold if you tell us
How to catch that horse"

But Sophia ran toward the sea
Found Aonbarr by the shore
Dear friend you must take your leave
Or you'll be free no more
Over the hill rode that gang of men
Raising fishing nets they yelled
Sophia bring us your fleet footed friend 
Or we'll tame you as well

Aonbarr bowed his handsome head
Sophia grabbed his mane
She swung to his back then she said
It's time for a race it's plain
A flash on four legs, they flew
Surrounded on three sides
Straight ahead was the ocean blue
But the horse never broke his stride 

Sophia cried out full of joy
Men you've met your match
Save your nets for fishing boys
There's some things you just can't catch
No you're trapped, said the leader, he cracked his lash
You'll be safe in my barn today
Aonbarr jumped without a splash
And he ran across the bay
