Life just keeps on going
Days go from chapters to pages to paragraphs
I used to be small
Now I'm here in the middle with bundles of photographs
You, you seem so numb
Living off crumbs of contentment
Like you're meant to be feeling this way
Day after day

When I'm all grown up
Grey at the edges, lines on my face
Weary from the years I've seen through?
Will I still laugh till my belly aches?
Will I have found a place for me too

When I'm all grown up
Will my paper wings turn to feathers
Or will these vines turn into roots
Will I withstand the stormy weather
Or let the wind and rain render me mute

Does this living thing get easier?
Or does it just get boring?
Do you embrace new things that come your way
Or are you too busy ignoring
Fighting and warring
Counting and scoring
To see

When I'm all grown up
Will I still ask so many questions?
Will I have changed?
What remains?
Does this fire in me have an expiration date?

When I'm all grown up
Will we have raised up a new generation
Who knows the love we never got
Will I still fight all these emotions?
Will my sadness still be sated with a song?

I'm scared I'll be like you
Everyone succumbs to
The pain that they've shamed all along
Am I strong?
You used to be strong
I remember you

If I had a crystal ball
A prophecy that showed it all
Would I look upon my life?
Would I want to know?

Do I get better at this game?
Does the voice in my head still sound the same?
Do I like myself a little more?
Do I finally kick that asshole out the door?

Will I still have big dreams
Or will I know better?
Will the days all blur into one
Will our lives have begun and begun and begun

When I'm all grown up
Will I feel complete
What's complete supposed to feel like anyway?
When I'm all grown up
Will I wish that today was yesterday?
