Met a stranger on a subway in June
She caught my eye and I held her attention
Asked to take some refreshment and soon
We were becoming both friends and relations
When January came though a friendship existed 
Relations had blistered and twisted and torn
Rode on a subway by way of anniversary
Sad, scared and silent

And then she put her head on my shoulders 
Asked me to comfort her a while
Think about when we were older
How it would be, how it would be
Together 

Met an old friend this afternoon
I knew she'd been crying but she didn't say why
Asked her to sit down for a few
See if there was something that I could undo
Turned out she'd just been watching the news
Wondering how man could do so much wrong
I said the right time will come when it's ready
For preachers and sinners 

And then she put her head on my shoulders 
Asked me to comfort her a while
Think about when we were older

Come back and tell me the news
Of all that had waited to be understood
