Dodola

Dodola (also spelled Doda, Dudulya and Didilya), also known under the names for butterfly: Paparuda, Peperuda, Perperuna or Preperuša, is a pagan tradition found in the Balkans. The central character of the ceremony is usually an orphan girl, less often, a boy. Wearing a skirt made of fresh green knitted vines and small branches, the girl born after the death of her father, the last girl child of the mother (if the mother subsequently gives birth to another child, great misfortunes are expected in the village), sings and dances through the streets of the village, stopping at every house, where the hosts sprinkle water on her. The ritual is associated with a particular tune to which a particular dance is performed, not only by the girl, but also by the village… more »

Skirts of corn husk grass shoots tied
Fairest and youngest wear them with no relief
Tangled hair spring flowers dried whose daughter is coming
Who have you chosen, Dodola
We call for you but only silence is received
Can you hear us, Perpuna
Whose daughter is coming

Walk through cornfields and gardens
Float through woods feet far up over the trees
Roots soak grounds swell with water whose daughter is coming
Thread your lilies along the sides of our streams
Looking up to the sky with hopes to see you falling

Who have you chosen, Dodola
Flowers blossom with your soft sweet beautiful speech
Bring back gold times of flourish whose daughter is coming
Hair tangled spring flowers dried
Bend and twist the fronds apart from the willow tree
Sprays of black and white cherry blossom
Whose daughter is

Garlands bind her hair gather wreaths
And make plans to scatter them out over the stream
At daybreak the dew will wash her face clean bright mother, Dodola
Thread your lilies along the sides of the streams
Looking up to the sky with hopes to see you falling

Drape lilac over the gates and hope that it will keep death far away
Toss marigold over roofs wash crosses marking their graves
Thread lilies along the brook whose daughter is

Walk through gardens far above trees
Gather wreaths to scatter out over streams
Whose daughters coming

Oj Dodole milli boze oj Dododle
Nasa doda boga moli oj dodo Dodole
Sitna kisa da zarosi oj do Dodole
Nasa polja da potopi oj Dodole
I da rodi bel psenica oj dodo dodole
I kukuruz sa dva klasa oj dodo Dodole
Oj Dodole milli boze

Don't come back here to bother us, Dodola
We'll find another way back to lush green gardens
When you eventually come for them our daughters
Wont be so easily taken from tight hands holding
All our daughters abandoned us, Dodola
Why can't you take something else instead, bright mother
Don't come back here to bother us
