One day I was walking down Massachusetts street
When a hippie with a pot leaf on his shirt skipped right past me 
I wonder where he's going and where he's been today 
I wonder what happened to put that smile on his face 
But I had an idea

When a police officer he turned and stopped to ask me,

He said, "Gents what are you doing surely you've both gone insane,"
I replied that where we're going you don't have to use your brain 
And he dropped his briefcase right into a drain

Dropped our burdens on the ground we don't even feel the heat 
Cars keep honking mad at us 'cus we're blocking up the way 
We don't care we're havin' a ball we are minding our parade

A stern sergeant was struck amazed our assembly ambled by 
It wasn't regulation and he felt an urge to cry 
Maybe just once away from base oh brass would never know 
It wouldn't hurt, no surely not, oh maybe he could go 
"Ah," he said, "forget my CO"
