While Mary was sleeping, Joe sat on the ground
Trying to wrap his head around what had gone down
They'd made it to Bethlehem, the baby'd been born
Now they're huddled in a stable trying to keep warm
Though he knew the stories, it was hard to believe
What Mary had told him 'bout who the kid was supposed to be

Joseph did not understand, but he was a good man
Who wanted to do what's right
So he watched over Mary and her baby
All through the night

Some strangers came by smelling like sheep
Joe said "Please be quiet, my wife's still asleep"
They said "We will not wake her, we just had to see
The newborn child", and they dropped to their knees
Joe asked "How did you find us? And how did you know"?
The shepherd laughed and said "You wouldn't believe if I told"

First thing in the morning, you've got to get them out of here
Soldiers are coming so you've got to go
Get yourselves 'cross the border and just lay low
