I woke up one night and realised
That I myself don't recognise
The person I've become at 23
It made me think about the nights
When I would stare into the sky
Dreaming 'bout the person who I thought I'd be
My father looked me in the eye
And said, my son oh tell me why
Have you forsaken the things we thought you'd do?
I never found the nerve or courage
To tell him 'bout my newfound knowledge
For the first time in my life, I have no clue

I went to college, got a degree
Found a job, and saw the world
For what it was, I followed the book
But they don't teach you back at school
That when you follow all the rules
Close to your heart, you are a fool
So now I ask myself

Who am I, what am I supposed to be?
Shouldn't I be somebody when I'm 23
Wish I knew, somebody please give me a clue
Is someone out there who can tell me what to do

My friends just go about their lives
And all of them appear to thrive
While here I'm on a nosedive, yes I'm sure
Reevaluating choices
Seeing where to make a difference
How to pace my life, see if I can do more

I fell in love and saw their ends
I made my enemies and friends
Forgave everyone, whatever the sin
But looking back, I can't help thinking
If there's something that I'm missing
Is it fair that I keep pondering
these questions to myself
