Nakhane

Nakhane Mahlakahlaka (born Nakhane Lubabalo Mavuso, 3 February 1988) is a South African singer, songwriter, actor, and novelist. They are formerly known under the stage name Nakhane Touré. Having grown up among a Christian community in Port Elizabeth, at 15 they moved to Johannesburg, leaving the church in 2013 and publicly celebrating their queerness with their debut album Brave Confusion. They found both controversy and critical acclaim with their starring role in John Trengove's 2017 feature film Inxeba (The Wound), and relocated to London to record and release 2018's heavily autobiographical album You Will Not Die. Seized me by the gullet again
Naked, a body that boasted youth
I immersed myself in it

And I bit into the dated fruit
I immersed myself in it

And I bit into the dated fruit
I stayed in there until my fingers pruned
It was then I knew that I was not ruined
I immersed myself in it (Will never happen again)
I immersed myself in it (Will never happen again)

And I could be found dancing again
In the back of a room of the Holiday Inn
With a glass and a grin
The light flooding in
Who knows me here?
All I know is that I’m living again

So I went walking
I’d never seen so much beauty in the face
Of a man so cunning
I immersed myself in it
Said I’ve been drowning
I immersed myself in him

Thought I was better
I thought myself loose-limbed and lithe
I was longing again

And I could be found dancing again
In the back of a room of the Holiday Inn
With a glass and a grin
The light flooding in
Who knows me here?
All I know is that I’m living again
And on the ground behind me
I left a trail of water
Loath to look back
Busying my mind with the strength I
Wished to gather
Wished to gather
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
Wished to gather
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
(A benevolent will had summoned me)
