The year I was born was 1991
I was my father's first biological son
I had one older brother, he was seven at the time
He didn't know his real dad, but he was sure glad he had mine

My father met my mother maybe three years before
She fell madly in love, but did not know what for
She was a single mother and previously married
My dad wanted her so bad, It was exciting and scary

Now my mom would ask my father back then nearly every night
John, when are you gonna make me your wife?

He said there's still one thing that I'd really like to see
Can you make fried okra the way my mom used to make me?

He came home to the sound of crackling on the stove
And it brought tears to his eyes
He found more happiness inside that girl
Than anything else beneath the sky

1993, my baby brother Cole was born
In a Kansas City hospital
And with a bag of Dallas dirt, my dad said, can I cover the bed?
I want my boy born on Texas soil, That's actually what he said

And when the doctor said you're crazy
My dad threw the bag away
He looked at me and said, son,
I guess Missouri's gonna have to be okay

For four years, we lived in Blue Springs and that's where I made most my first memories
Like the first time I saw a rainbow or that first dog I had named Sissy
And I still remember the first time music meant anything to me
I was in my room humming the melody to We Will Rock You by Queen

And the parents sat the boys down in 1996 and said,
We're moving the family back to Texas
Yeah, we're moving back to Dallas, Texas

So we built a home on a piece of land outside of town
Just like my father always wanted to
And we buried a Bible where the living room should be
And we prayed, Lord, you gave us this house, now we give it back to you

Give it back to you
Give it back to you
