The Tempest

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, probably written in 1610–1611, and thought to be one of the last plays that he wrote alone. After the first scene, which takes place on a ship at sea during a tempest, the rest of the story is set on a remote island, where Prospero, a complex and contradictory character, lives with his daughter Miranda, and his two servants: Caliban, a savage monster figure, and Ariel, an airy spirit. The play contains music and songs that evoke the spirit of enchantment on the island. It explores many themes, including magic, betrayal, revenge, and family. In Act IV, a wedding masque serves as a play-within-a-play, and contributes spectacle, allegory, and elevated language. Although The Tempest is listed in the First Folio as the… more »

Deep in the frosty peaks
I and my companions seek
In the land of the rising sun
The safety of a smoky Baru
At dusk when the day is done
Drop our packs, a round of drinks
There in the dark an old man sits
Shadowed corner we find our seats
Alone and silent passes the night
Then at last he finally speaks
"Years ago she found us
Floated through the togee soundless
One winter's day" his tale begins
Seeks the tired and weak in the snow
Try to fight she always wins
Snow woman of the mountain
Her victims can't be counted
Unearthly beauty hides pure evil
Frozen death awaits, no man her equal
Eyes that strike terror into your soul
Tells the tale of the Yuki Onna
Emerged from the flurries
No more pain no more worries
Lured us in with her siren song
One by one our party is taken
Don't tread where you don't belong
Scattered on the high trail
As the wind becomes a gale
Hide, get away our only thought
We were easy pickings in the blizzard
Oh, the horror that woman wrought
Daybreak and I'm alone
Why I was spared I'll never know
The whole company dead and gone
My friends abandoned in icy graves
Somehow I learned to carry on
Snow woman of the mountain
Her victims can't be counted
Unearthly beauty hides pure evil
Frozen death awaits, no man her equal
Eyes that strike terror into your soul
Tells the tale of the Yuki Onna
Transfixed by the old man's tale
We all sit in silence and finish our ale
Afraid now but a little wiser
We heed the warning of our old advisor
Morning comes and we head home
Into the Queen of Death's realm we won't roam
Snow woman of the mountain
Her victims can't be counted
Unearthly beauty hides pure evil
Frozen death awaits, no man her equal
Eyes that strike terror into your soul
Tells the tale of the Yuki Onna
