Found a stone on Thirty-second street in a field all overgrown Said “Here lies old poor Regina. Died tonight.” By my house that’s laden marble with a porch of pearly gray Made me wonder if the stone had more to write Took a trip down to the college; asked the lady by the desk If we looked up poor Regina, could we see Found her name in county records, born in nineteen sixty-two And her picture looked an awful lot like me Seems Regina’s dad was wealthy, but he had a wandering eye Paid the ladies at the parlor for some fun And one lady took his fancy, so he spent entire nights Till her warning of a child came undone Ain’t it sad when you discover that the things you thought were true Change your story to a poem that doesn’t rhyme And the time arrives if you had only opened up your eyes The truth you never knew was right in front of you All the time Said “Regina is her name, and you’re the father of the child,” Then he cursed her for her planning to deceive She demanded that he pay her lest she take it to the news Then Regina’s dad bent down as if to leave Pulled the leather strap he used to keep his denims in their place And he wrapped it round her neck and then he squeezed If Regina was his baby no one need to ever know He had money, and could do just what he pleased She lay dying in the parlor, crying baby at her side Put the child in a wrap to calm her down Then he drove them to the bridge over the river out of town To remove the evidence and let them drown First the madam took a tumble with the water rushing by Tossed the body, then it disappeared from sight As he opened up the blanket just to take one final look What he saw turned him from murdering that night Ain’t it sad when you discover that the things you thought were true Change your story to a poem that doesn’t rhyme And the time arrives if you had only opened up your eyes The truth you never knew was right in front of you All the time See, Regina had his smile, and her eyes were hazel too As she reached up to his face as if to say “See this birthmark on your face is like the one I also have I’m your baby”, and the man just looked away Wrapped Regina in the blanket, took her to a friend in town With a house laden in marble at the time Said to take care of Regina and I’ll pay you more than fair Gave her money not to mention of the crime Asked my Ma about Regina, and the stone out in the field As she stood there like a beast out in the cold Said she’d never given birth, and that Regina was the one My life story started slowly to unfold Seems Regina had a baby with a boy she never knew And that grandpa came around to hide the lie When the baby came, she lay there in the care of Grampa Joe Though the baby lived, Regina had to die So together they transpired; they had done this thing before Made a plan to hide her body in the field And the stone, just like my birthmark, told a story long and cold That the tale of old Regina now revealed Ain’t it sad when you discover that the things you thought were true Change your story to a poem that doesn’t rhyme And the time arrives if you had only opened up your eyes The truth you never knew was right in front of you All the ---
