Tritagonist

In literature, the tritagonist (from Ancient Greek τριταγωνιστής (tritagōnistḗs) 'third actor') or tertiary main character is the third most important character of a narrative, after the protagonist and deuteragonist. In ancient Greek drama, the tritagonist was the third member of the acting troupe. As a character, a tritagonist may act as the instigator or cause of the sufferings of the protagonist. Despite being the least sympathetic character of the drama, they occasion the situations by which pity and sympathy for the protagonist are excited.: 451  more »

The Protagonist
Ducking, dodging, running, and hiding:
Every stranger's a potential danger
Fight or flight become one with every leap
whether across sidewalk or cobbled street
The dead are laid to rest
But for the living liberty becomes a battle
To not jest with revenge towards strangers' mockeries
Yet neither accept their violence
To best attacks with equal force
Then continue the course onward from this hellhole
The Black Knight
When peace was needed most,
You all drew swords; me and mine
We already lived through fruitless, lackluster seasons –
Winters scoffing at men's errors, summers of seclusion
With only prayers for company – did you believe
We'd join your delusions, disillusioned with disillusionment
The Protagonist
With memories of ideals tasted yet with hope deterred
I defer to my pockets' contraband: a diamond ring and homely photo
Hidden all this time. My lack is heavy-laden
But being guilt-ridden is riddance
Even still, the passing gallows are a dreadful reminder
Of years wasted, with no bosom to satiate thirst
The Black Knight
Crashing through vacant building walls doused in kerosene:
Isn't it a miracle we survived despite our many doubts
The Protagonist
Because I once was told how we never deserved a good wife
Only because I defended and rebelled against disorder
A day later, the ring was placed in my hand
So what now?! how long ago
Yet my undeservingness is still a dollar short
The Black Knight
Such are the thoughts of those at sidewalk ends
Stepping into green pastures, with unkempt grass
And rivers and forests ahead, with harmony
Amidst the midnight's crickets and frog ribbets
God's creation sings of peace
While mankind's city growls of disease
But the breeze collapses us to our knees
As if to say trauma, lack, and wasted time is far behind
The Protagonist
But why is tranquility so short-lived
With grass-stained knees we hear indiscernible echoes
As if familiar, a ghastly presence, a reminder that
Wives and peace will never be deserved
The Black Knight
A shadow falls over the forest and across us
How can this be? Its light is pale luminescence
Much like the Pale Horse, a devouring mother
Seen scourging soldiers on distant sands
Despite fear, your tenacity surprises me
The Protagonist
Not this time: you won't destroy us
The Black Knight
With a cavern to our backs, its light fluid and otherworldly
In the shadow of this colossus, the mountain disappears
Then reappears, barefooted and floating,
A frail and harmless phantom
But I know better: such ghosts come for rings of power
Life but a wargame amusing their false regency
Usurpers of kingdoms and dignity
The Ghost
I come for what's mine
And hell I bring with me to its knees
The Black Knight
Its body shutters, hurling us backward
Adrenaline surge: the battle is a blur
Outclassed, our every maneuver a hammer
To destroy the strong, but to it – a tickle
The Ghost
What a drag… growing old
The Protagonist
It screeches as armor falls with one strike
I see you, my friend, exposed in bloodied shock
The Ghost
What puzzles you? the nature of my game
The Protagonist
Crashing to our faces, the cave's mouth is before us
The Ghost
You were raised better than this defiance
Such deserves hellfire
The Black Knight
These are the words of tyrants,
But I recognize the oldest wound
The Protagonist
Weren't you supposed to have unconditional love?
If this is the last time you see me
Before burning in an eternal lake of fire
What would you have to say
The Black Knight
What cruelty! yet one final blow hurtles us
Past the threshold, with two simple words
The Ghost
Good riddance
The Black Knight
We fall and writhe, accelerating through space and time
And for what? A game of control
The reclaiming of their dignity at others' expense
The question of if love was real
If we have damned ourselves
The Protagonist
We've just resisted a devil
Who wears my mother's face
