Well he spent 26 years, turned calluses on his hands
Into a four year degree for his little girl and little man
He just kept plowing corn, It was the only thing that he knew
It kept him out of trouble and sent his kids to school
His little lady said now daddy, when are you coming back home
It's been 15 hours just here today, me and momma's tired of being alone
He said

Listen here baby, your little brother will be born soon
I'll be working this job pulling overtime hours
To keep your bellies filled with food
But you and momma shouldn't worry
You know that I'll be just fine
Well I wish I could see you but I'm a little busy
Working overtime tonight

Well his little lady finally grew older, she made her way through a four year school
And she got a good job way down in Atlanta sending files for an institute
But her momma kept calling, because her daddy was back home sick
Meanwhile she's busy working for her own working on a double shift
And her momma said listen now baby, I'm tired of getting your voicemail
When are you coming home she said I don't know but I'm working myself to death
She said

Listen here momma, your grandson will be born soon
I'll be working this job pulling overtime hours
To keep his belly filled with food
But you and daddy shouldn't worry, you know that I'll be just fine
Well I wish I could see you, but I'm a little busy working overtime tonight

At 8 in the evening, she was singing her son lullabies
When the answering machine said that her old man went home to the lord that night
She didn't want to believe it, she didn't want to understand
How the good lord could call him home before she could come back home again
Well she finally got to see him for a minute, before they laid him down
And as they went to go and put his casket deep in that cold cold ground
She said

Daddy I love you, I wish I could of came home before
I've been doing what you taught me and my little brother I've been keeping up with my chores
But I'll see you one day, back then you were my whole world
Well I hope that your proud of the woman I am and I'll always be your little girl
Well I hope that your proud of the woman I am and I'll always be your little girl

Well he spent 26 years, turned calluses on his hands
Into a four year degree for his little girl and little man
