He sits Alone on a curbside Throne
He's what's Known as an Unknown
He needs a sum for some Rum or some Gin
to be Numb God spare him the Sin
It's cold as ice, his bones are stiff
He sighs a frozen cloud
He hates this place, he'd like to live
Not just survive the crowd
All of these people, all of these homes
They're fed and they're warm
All of this comfort, all of this calm
While he starves in the storm
Snowflakes in the Streetlight
The Indifference of the City
None listen when he talks right
So he mutters Self Pity

Hey man
Could you spare a dollar?
I'm scared
I won't live much longer

I watch the Sky from a window on High
Starlight's polluted from sight
A pack on my back a laptop but the rest
Would prompt a cop to arrest
The buzz is nice, the couch is warm
I breathe a poison cloud
A wasted night, a wasted mind
To blur into the crowd
A room full of friends, a room full of drink
But I'm lonely and I'm pained.
It makes little sense, but it's harder to think
With a fuzz still clouding my brain
Boredom kills a fun night
So we head out in the cold
I know the frost should still bite
But the Bourbon's taken hold

Hey man
Could I bum another?
I'm scared
I can't take the pressure

He watches us walk
We misplace our feet
I'm watching him sit
In a tent by the street
He's wondering if we've
Got change we could spare
I'm wondering if he
Smells Bourbon in the air
Burgers on the corner
I'm hanging with the guys
He's prepping for the coroner
Decomposing for the flies
I eat until I'm full and then I
Offer him the rest
He takes it Shamefaced and then he
Breaks his Daily Fast

We leave him in the cold cause I'm shivering
The buzz is no longer delivering
Back to the dorm where it's warm and I realize
I'd forgotten something

My backpack
Inside is a laptop, some poems, and a bottle of bourbon

His heart starts in his chest
He's staring at the bag I left
His fingers mind themselves
Unzip the top to mind the contents
The ethics of this are illusive
Self pity is more conclusive
I was entitled to lose it
'Cause I was so sure to abuse it
Pawn shop down a block
Was he not more deserving?
Hypothermic shock
Is a thought so unnerving
As for the bourbon that disappears here
So much for the cold and the fear
The steps of the Devil are drawing quite near
The demons on hold for the clear
But the Guilt sets in when he starts up the laptop
Sees all of my music's not backed up
Reads a few poems and chokes up
Then he drops it... and runs

Hey man...
I'm scared...
Hey man...
I'm scared...

I promise it's all nothing but sewer-bound poison
Decide to rather be in pain but learning to be Happy
Than to rather be Miserably Numb
It's funny how little it seems to matter
Until the stakes are high enough to shake you into Sobriety
