When the shadows move from b'yond the darkness
And everyone you know thinks it is real
Know you have the strength to venture past it
You see far beyond the spinning wheel

When the wind whispers the wisps of poison
Takes the strongest soul to crawl below
Here's where all the messengers are cut down
Some will fall down to die in the snow

Some will make it all the way to Juneau
Some will rest forever in the haze
Some will learn from others in the Tongass
Some will have to make their own mistakes

Storm blew in at 3 o' clock this morning
Put the entire group right to the test
Merrick burned his map up for survival
Many of the group were laid to rest

At the break of dawn the winds blew soft and warmer
I looked out on the lands both old and new
No part of the cycle was unbroken
Many times again this land's been through

Some of us were quite so close to death now
Some laid down to die up in the haze
Some folks learned from others in the Tongass
Some folks had to make their own mistakes
