Twelve thousand strong, in line we stood
Ready for battle by the edge of the wood
Our cannons boomed, shells flew overhead
Give 'em hell boys, is all we said
Down the line blared the trumpet's call
A rebel yell rose from us all
The longest mile across open fields
Was ours to cross, never to yield
Their cannons fire, their muskets blaze
Onward we march through smoke and haze
At right and at left, many men fell
Screams arise from this bloody hell
The colors still fly, the captain shouts
This battle's ours, I have no doubts
A musket's ball strikes his head
Down goes our captain, now stone dead
Death and destruction rain from the sky
Smoke, blood and tears fill up my eye
The smell of burnt powder reeks in the air
Now we must charge where others don't dare
