Hersir

A Hersir was a local Viking military commander of a hundred (a county subdivision), of about 100 men, and owed allegiance to a jarl or king. They were also aspiring landowners, and, like the middle class in many feudal societies, supported the kings in their centralization of power. Originally, the term Hersir referred to a wealthy farmer who owned land and had the status of a leader. Throughout the Viking Age, Hersir was eventually redefined as someone who organized and led raids. In the 10th century, the influence of Hersirs began to decrease due to the development of effective national monarchies in Scandinavia. Hersir was again redefined later on to mean a local leader or representative. The independence of the Hersir as a military leader eventually vanis… more »

The celebration was raging
Out in the barn
The women were lustful
And the men were frothing at their mouths
The mead was flowing
And spirits were high
Little did they expect
That all of their deaths were nigh
A goat-footed fiddler
Hieratically clothed
Trod across the threshold
No iron to keep him out
As he began playing
No one could resist
They all started dancing
Ensnared by Satan's fist
They danced like madmen
Overcome by the light of the moon
His tunes were not of this world
And would not cease any time soon
They danced like possessed
As if the ground was ablaze
Burning with hellfire
Dancing in a rabid craze

Dance! Dance, little devils
Under my spell, at my command

As night went on
The dancing grew more intense
Their feet began blistering
Their bones started to ache
The fiddler decided
It was time to leave
By the snap of his fingers
They followed him towards to the creek

Down, down
Follow the tune of the fiddler
Down, down
Follow me into the cold, dark waters
Down, down
Dance in my devilish wake
Down, down
Down into hell
Down into hell

Dance! dance, my pretties
Dance 'til your feet are rent

As they arrived at the creek
A young girl awoke from the trance
She tried to break the circle
But the fiddler caught her glance
She cried out for Jesus Christ:
"Forgive me, let me repent!"
But the fiddler had taken his hold
And into the creek they went
As water entered their lungs
They finally knew
That if you dance with the Devil
The Devil dances with you
