Brian Gerald Nicholson (9 May 1933 – 20 January 2018) was a British trade unionist. Nicholson grew up in the East End of London, and worked as a docker. He joined the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), and by 1968 was a member of the executive of its No.1 Docks Group. In this role, he was a vocal opponent of racism and fascism, speaking out in particular against the support of some dockers for Enoch Powell. You and I have had quite the history
Used to wonder if I was talking to the ceiling
Used to blame You for why I could never believe
But it's possible it's always been a two-way street
Acted like all of my objections were devastating
Skepticism is healthy
But I was just being lazy
'Cause there's a tremendous difference
Between sincere seekin'
And excuses just to stop searchin'

Maybe a rocky journey makes for a sweeter destination
And a little uncertainty's part of the equation
Maybe I've set an impossible standard
Maybe the questions are part of the answer

It seems at least somewhat plausible
That You wouldn't be up there completely visible
Maybe we'd forget the status of our role
Become too dependent on the supernatural
But still I must ask why your voice
Doesn't have more clarity
Seems like genuine seekers
Oh we still struggle to see
Seems a little far-reaching
To question every non-believer's sincerity
Maybe it's more about beliefs that you live out
Than confidence in those beliefs

Oh
Maybe a rocky journey makes for a sweeter destination
And a little uncertainty's part of the equation
Maybe I've set an impossible standard
Maybe the questions are part of
Part of the answer
Part of the answer
