On one gray winter evening
In the freezing rain and snow
She passed me by in the failing light
Out along the Fall Line Road

Stories were told of the tortured souls
Men she'd charmed and set to reeling
With her hair like coal and eyes so green
A voice just like a bell a ringing

And I saw staunch and stalwart friends
Brothers driven to contend
Brought to blows for the chance to win
The blessings of her favor

The victims weren't hard to find
Lifeless souls with hollow eyes
Gaunt and feeble, trudging by
With empty stares from here to rapture

What dark cloud could ever douse the light
Of such wild and wayfaring minds
Well I've seen those very shadows
And walked with a purpose not my own

Like any fool to blind to see
She took my hand so soft and sweet
Bound with velvet to a rusty seat
I took for a golden throne

When I woke and she was gone
I cursed the sky and walked alone
It was the darkest of the dawns
These wretched eyes have ever seen

Now I walk those empty miles
A lost and wayward child
Hoping she'll come drifting by
