But Kennedy won
Johnson became the VP
But wanted more responsibility

A shrewd, ambitious man doing the best at what he does

Well, in late '63, in Dallas
JFK was gunned down
LBJ assumed the role of president
Began the War on Poverty
Expanded Civil Rights
Pressed NASA, and more soldiers to South Vietnam were sent
He faced protests over the Vietnam stalemate
So in '68, chose not to run

He knew a second term, he wouldn't have won

Johnson left DC
And returned to Stonewall
Wrote two books and oversaw his library
Had a series of heart attacks
And died January 22, 1973
His legacy was blemished by the Vietnam quagmire
His Great Society plan made his party strong
